Chicago USPS Letter Carrier Helps Save Elderly Woman After Fall

In a remarkable act of observation and compassion, Chicago USPS Letter Carrier Doriel Carson went above and beyond her postal duties — and may have saved a life in the process.

It was just another day on her delivery route following a holiday weekend when Carson noticed something unusual. A mailbox that is normally emptied daily by a customer was now overflowing with mail. Sensing something wasn’t right, she knocked on the door of the residence. When there was no response, she didn’t ignore the warning signs.

Instead, Carson approached a neighbor across the street and shared her concern. That neighbor quickly called 911.

A Timely Discovery

When paramedics arrived and entered the home, they found the elderly woman — in her 80s — at the bottom of a staircase. She had fallen while trying to change a light bulb and had been lying on the floor for three days, unable to move or call for help.

Thanks to Carson’s attention to detail and willingness to act, emergency responders were able to get the woman to a nearby hospital where she continues to recover.

Recognizing Heroic Actions

“The first responders said Carson’s actions likely saved the customer’s life,” said Danielle Young, a local USPS customer services supervisor.

Carson’s efforts have earned her recognition through the Postmaster General Heroes’ Program, which celebrates employees who go above and beyond their regular duties to help others in need.
