She Makes It Count: USPS Finance Specialist Builds Lasting Connections With Customers

With over 31 years of service under her belt, Eleanor Gary isn’t just a USPS employee — she’s a cornerstone of her postal community.

Eleanor began her journey with the United States Postal Service as a temporary employee and eventually transitioned to delivering mail after the birth of her daughter, Alissa. Today, she serves as a Customer Services Supervisor at the West Los Angeles station — a role that allows her to wear many hats and make a difference every day.

Wearing Many Hats, Making a Big Impact

“Customer service covers so much now,” Eleanor shares. “One recent morning, I came in early to help with operations — making sure we had the right employees in the right places to expedite the mail. If you get off to a great start, the day runs so much smoother.”

From operational support to finance management, Eleanor’s days are filled with variety. Whether assisting retail associates with passports or working in Customer 360, she’s deeply involved in creating positive customer experiences.

A Career Full of Purpose and Connection

What Eleanor treasures most is the direct connection with customers — helping resolve service issues, assisting with passports, or simply delivering mail. It’s the human side of USPS that drives her.

Over the years, Eleanor has even brought her family into the USPS fold. She met her husband, Katiah Gary, a safety specialist in the California 5 District, through the Postal Service. “We took postal family to the next level,” she laughs.

Honoring Icons and Creating Joy

One of Eleanor’s favorite responsibilities is helping with stamp dedication ceremonies and special events. These events unite communities and celebrate influential figures.

Her most cherished moment? Assisting with the unveiling of the Betty White Forever stamp at the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens. “Betty White was once my customer. I even processed her passport,” Eleanor recalls. “She was as kind and warm in person as you’d expect. That made the dedication feel so special.”

A Proud Member of the Postal Family

To Eleanor Gary, USPS is more than a job — it’s a family, a fraternity, and a lifelong calling. Her dedication and heart for service are what make the Postal Service such an essential part of communities nationwide.
