USPS Enhances Service Standards with New Tools and Resources
The United States Postal Service (USPS) is making strategic refinements to its service standards to improve efficiency, reliability, and cost savings. As part of these enhancements, USPS has introduced new online tools and a fact sheet to help customers better understand expected delivery times.
Key Changes in Service Standards
These updates will impact various mailing and shipping services, including:
- First-Class Mail
- Periodicals
- Marketing Mail
- Package Services (Bound Printed Matter, Media Mail, and Library Mail)
- USPS Ground Advantage
- Priority Mail & Priority Mail Express
By implementing these refinements, USPS aims to save at least $36 billion over the next decade by optimizing transportation, processing, and real estate costs.
Two-Phase Implementation
To ensure a smooth transition, the new service standards will be rolled out in two phases:
- Phase 1: Begins April 1
- Phase 2: Begins July 1
These improvements align with USPS’s Delivering for America 10-year plan, which has already resulted in:
- $2.2 billion in annual transportation cost savings by optimizing networks.
- $2.5 billion in savings through enhanced plant productivity and reduced work hours.
- $3.5 billion in additional annual revenue by adapting product offerings to changing customer needs.
What Customers Can Expect
The updated service standards will:
- Maintain the current delivery timeframes for First-Class Mail and USPS Ground Advantage (no more than 5 days).
- Improve service predictability and reliability.
- Offer 2-3-day delivery within specific regions and local areas.
- Introduce flexibility in regional transportation schedules, with some minor adjustments (up to one extra day in certain cases) while improving overall mail and package transit times.

To help customers prepare for these changes, USPS is launching user-friendly tools on March 24:
Service Standards Lookup Tool – Check estimated delivery times between ZIP Codes on a specific mailing date at usps.com.
Interactive Delivery Map – Enter your ZIP Code and mail class to see expected delivery times.
