USPS Showcases New Sorting and Delivery Centers Across the Nation
As part of its Delivering for America plan and a $40 billion infrastructure investment, the Postal Service has opened 96 new Sorting and Delivery Centers (S&DCs) since 2022 — and is now putting them on display for employees and local media.
Open houses are being held across the country, offering a behind-the-scenes look at these upgraded facilities. In Winston-Salem, NC, approximately 200 employees and family members toured the center and watched a demonstration of a new high-speed sorting machine.
“The feedback from employees has been incredibly positive,” said Winston-Salem Postmaster Demaris McCants. “The upgrades are amazing. Employees are truly going to benefit from the transformation of this facility.”
Each S&DC features:
- Modernized workspaces
- Improved equipment
- Newer, safer delivery vehicles
Chief Retail and Delivery Officer Elvin Mercado emphasized that these investments are designed to both enhance operational efficiency and create a safer, healthier work environment for USPS employees.
In Waco, TX, media outlets toured the 72,000-square-foot S&DC, where they previewed the facility’s electric vehicle (EV) fleet and charging stations. Waco currently operates a dozen EVs and is set to receive many more in the coming year.
Since 2021, USPS has deployed:
- Over 1,700 delivery vehicles to S&DCs
- More than 57,000 vehicles nationwide
Looking ahead, USPS plans to open approximately 300 additional S&DCs in the next few years, with new facilities coming soon to Georgia, California, Nevada, and Arizona.
